Fencing in S'pore aims for Olympic glory within next 10 years

By Patwant Singh |
Posted: 16 July 2010
SINGAPORE : Fencing in Singapore is the latest sport looking at Olympic glory. And leading that initiative is a private school, which has invested millions of dollars and also brought in a world class technical consultant.

Fencing in Singapore has been growing steadily and Z Fencing has played a major role in that development. The school has 700 students, and about 10 per cent are pursuing the sport at an elite level.

And to further sharpen the skills of those at the top, an Olympic silver-medallist from Germany has also been recruited.

Ralf Bissdorf, technical consultant, Z Fencing, said: "We want to try to get somebody to the Olympics within the next 10 years, so we need time and commitment. I think we have all the groundwork laid, the foundation is here and I am here to develop that groundwork and that foundation."

The commitment must come from the youngsters, many of whom are keen to be Olympians.

Nicole Mae Wong, a student at Z Fencing said: "It's possible, if you set your mind to it, I'm sure you can do it, anything, you can do it!"

Another student, Yau Han Xiang, said: "The fencer who wants to go to the Olympics should have discipline."

Discipline and coaching aside, the school has also pumped in money to help win that gold medal.

T K Wong, founder of Z Fencing, said: "In fact, we have set aside S$3 million over the next few years to make this happen. So we are very determined, we are putting in conditioning systems, we are in fact sponsoring 20 of the national fencers - they are all training under our Club Z."

Two of the club's charges are part of the Singapore Fencing team competing at the Youth Olympic Games.

The school will also organise an international competition at the end of this month, when eight top male fencers will cross swords.

Besides the competition, the eight champions will also be conducting workshops and clinics at Z Fencing. They will also be showing the fencers six Olympic medals - four of which are gold - and forty world championship medals that they have won in the hope to inspire the young ones.

Fencing's carving path towards Olympic dream

by Patwant Singh
(Today Online, Saturday July 17 2010)
SINGAPORE - As a young boy, German Ralf Bissdorf set off from his hometown of Heideheim, with a population of just 50,000, to scale the summit of the fencing world.
An Olympic silver in the foil at the 2000 Sydney Games and 11 world titles later, the 38-year-old is out to prove that tiny Singapore, which is no stranger
to punching above its weight, can similarly produce a world beater in the sport.

And he is giving himself up to a decade to deliver.

Speaking exclusively to MediaCorp recently, the lanky German, a technical director with Z Fencing, a private club here with 700 students, said: "The Singapore fencers are at the same stage I used to be 20 years ago, so I am going on the same journey again, albeit in a different capacity, and I'm convinced it is possible."

Z Fencing's founder, TK Wong, has so much faith in the project that he has set aside $3 million to put in place a system to realise the dream.

"Our goal is to go for gold. Z Fencing's dream is ambitious, but we believe it's reachable," he said.

"We started planning two years ago, after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and decided to bring in people who have experienced the Olympic journey because that kind of expertise and experience is very important.

"So we scoured the world and found Ralf."

The German will first be with the club full-time for a year and then part-time after that.

He is already pleased with the facilities and the potential pool here.

"We have kids at the age of 16, 17 who are very talented and another bunch of kids who are a little bit younger. We need 10 years to groom them and deliver," he said.

The club said they are already in talks with the national sports association and other parties to ensure its Olympic vision is realised.

Nicole Wong, 12, who aspires to be an Olympian someday, said she is convinced the Republic would be able to produce a world-class fencer.

"I'm sure one of us Singaporeans will be able to make it. Z Fencing has asked us to be committed and we have to be very determined, so nothing can stand in your way," she said.

The club have already begun to build the youngsters' dreams, with 20 national fencers under their wing and two - Justin Ong and Rania Rahardja - who will represent Singapore at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games from Aug 14 to 26.

Congratulations To Our Youth Olympic Games Fencers

Congratulations to Rania Rahardja and Justin Ong on being selected to represent Singapore in the Youth Olympic Games in the Women's Epee and Men's Foil fencing events respectively.

ustin and Rania are members of our Zyouth Elite Fencers and have had great success in their competition history enroute to the YOG.

Rania is Singapore's first and only Asian Cadet Fencing Champion.

Justin is Singapore's only Cadet World Cup Fencing Championships medalist for foil.

Congratulations and we cannot wait to see you in action at the YOG on August 17. One for all, all for Z!

Z Fencers Selected For Junior Sports Academy

Congratulations to our young Z Fencers for their selection in the Junior Sports Academy (JSA). The JSA is a national effort within the schools to groom young sports talents at the primary level. We are pleased that our Z Fencers form the significant majority of young fencers selected.

Tanya Aw, Brian Cheong, Lin Fang Yi, Sim Nigel, Gabriel Tan, Mannfred Tan, Tatiana Wong and Yau Han Xiang. Aarya Berthier and Shyrie Chopra too have been selected but have opted to focus training exclusively at Z Fencing.

Congratulations!
